Do bills that establish “Universal Background Checks” – like I-594, set to be voted on this year in Washington state – really do just that, or do they also serve as a tool to enable future confiscation of firearms? Do background checks prevent crime or merely stymie peaceful gun owners; if not, why are government officials at both federal and state levels calling for their wider use?
