Governments Toil for Credibility after Wikileaks Revelations
Today’s show is in two parts – one for each of two big topics. In the first half, I discuss (and mourn) the recent Wikileaks revelations about how the government, though such agencies as the CIA, is intruding on our lives and abusing some of our basic human rights to a degree that the Stasi and KGB could only have dreamt of. Our shift from a nation under laws to a nation under men is more complete than we knew. I talk about my fear that once you abuse so many people so utterly and they have no legitimate means to stop that abuse, violence becomes increasingly likely. That’s something I don’t want to see but it’s a predictable outcome of the behavior of the CIA toward the rest of us. And if it happens, the moral responsibility will lie squarely at the feet of that agency’s employees.
In the second part of the show, I talk about the validity of sentiment in our lives in general, and in politics in particular… especially inasmuch as it is expressed and felt as patriotism. I tell a very personal story which I think proves that patriotism is NOT exclusionary of other nations or people, nor does it seek to put them down…. But I make an even stronger claim: the love of one’s own country can enable one to love those from other countries even more…
